Langham Painted Shaker Kitchen Design

Painted Shaker Kitchen for a Barn-Style Newbuild in Thetford

Not every newbuild looks like a newbuild. This property near Thetford was designed from the ground up to feel like a period barn conversion, high vaulted ceiling, exposed traditional beams, and a sense of space that most new homes don’t have. The brief to us was to design a kitchen that matched that character, while being fully equipped for modern family life.

The Design Brief

The client wanted a kitchen that honoured the architectural feel of the room without resorting to pastiche. It needed to look as though it belonged in a building with history, while functioning as a genuinely capable family kitchen. Durability mattered, as did a design that would look right in ten years as much as on the day it was installed.

Why Langham Sage?

Second Nature’s Langham range uses wide-rail painted shaker doors — a heavier, more substantial profile than a standard shaker that suits a room with real architectural presence. In Sage, the colour reads as natural and grounded rather than decorative, working with the warmth of the beams rather than competing with them. It was the right call for this room

The Peninsula and Worktop

A peninsula with a solid oak worktop provides the informal dining and prep space the family needed, with the warm timber adding a natural counterpoint to the painted cabinetry. The main worktop run uses Cosmic leather black granite throughout, a material that brings depth and texture to the space without looking glossy or overly contemporary. Matching granite upstands and splashback keep the look clean and cohesive.

The Range Cooker

A Britannia dual fuel range cooker in graphite sits naturally in a kitchen designed around a barn aesthetic, it has the visual weight and presence that the room needed at its focal point. The Britannia canopy hood above it continues the same industrial quality. These are appliances chosen for the character they bring to the room, not just their specifications.

The Details That Make It Work

A kitchen designed around a period aesthetic needs the right accessories to feel authentic rather than assembled. Here that comes through in several details:

  • Solid oak display shelves that echo the beam material and add warmth above the worktops
  • Plate rack and bottle rack built into the cabinetry for genuine everyday functionality
  • Glazed cabinets that break up the run of solid doors and lighten the upper half of the kitchen
  • Minerale travertine floor tiles that suit the room’s character far better than any modern porcelain alternative
  • Stainless steel bar handles that give a subtle contemporary edge without disrupting the overall feel

A Kitchen Designed for the Long Term

One of the things that defines a well-designed traditional kitchen is that it doesn’t date. The materials and proportions in this Thetford kitchen — natural stone, solid timber, painted shaker doors, a proper range cooker — are the same combination that has worked in family homes for generations. That was the point. It will look exactly right in twenty years.

If you’re planning a kitchen that needs to suit a property with character, whether a newbuild designed to feel traditional or a genuine period home, we’d love to talk through the design options.
